What checks are carried out on adults helping at units?

All new volunteers/ young leaders/ leaders (aged 16 or over) who have unsupervised access to girls and young women are asked to agree to a check through the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB). These are done at a local level within the County and are coorindated through Guiding Development.

In addition to criminal-record checks, all volunteers are asked to complete an online application form or our Adult Application form. This involves:

  1. providing two referees who can confirm the volunteer’s suitability to work with specific age groups
  2. disclosing any criminal convictions involving children and/or young people or involving dishonesty/deception
  3. signing a declaration that they agree to abide by Our Safety and Safeguarding policy.

The Leadership Qualification (LQ) is for women who wish to become Girlguiding UK Leaders or Assistant Leaders. Young Leaders can start working on the LQ from the age of 16 and can become Leaders from the age of 18.

Whichever section appeals most, whether Rainbows, Brownies, Guides or the Senior Section, the LQ will develop your skills and experience to help you deliver guiding that is fun, girl-led and engaging for the girls and young women in your unit.

The LQ contains the following modules:

  • Module 1: Your role in the programme
  • Module 2: Your role in Girlguiding UK
  • Module 3: Your role in safety and unit administration
  • Module 4: Your role in managing the unit (optional for Assistant Leaders)

The LQ is competency based, which means that you learn as you go along. You will also have a personal Mentor to help you through the Qualification. If you are interested in starting your ALQ, speak to your Unit Guider or Division Commissioner (who can be identified on the family tree). Help is always at hand and the ALQ pack is what you need to start you on your way (enthusiasm and motivation also helps!).

Visit the GirlGuiding UK website for further information on the ALQ.
